As we read the Constitution, we realize that there are only a few very limited powers granted to our federal government and Congress, most of which can be found in Article 1, Section 8. When the Constitution was presented to the people, they felt that even more restraints should be put on the federal government, and the 10 amendments known as the Bill or Rights were adopted to “bind men down with the chains of the Constitution” as Jefferson so eloquently phrased it.
Nowhere in the Constitution or Declaration of Independence will you see the phrase “separation of church and state.” Yet in our modern society, we are taught this from a very young age; that Church and State don’t belong together. Many will often quote the 1st amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” and use this as their basis for the separation argument.
The 2nd amendment protects our rights to both KEEP and BEAR arms, saying that neither of these rights shall be infringed. And yet our federal government has not just infringed upon those rights, but has totally revoked them in many instances. Disarming U.S. citizens in their own homes after Katrina, not allowing guns in any government building, and prohibiting guns on any national park property. How is that not infringement?
The creation of a military to protect our nation and its' shores is one of the greatest responsibilities of the federal government. It is the main reason that the colonies switched from the Articles of Confederation to a more balanced form of Constitutional Republic. Unfortunately, many of the current politicians are too blinded by special interests such as protecting American “corporate interests” overseas while bases here at home have been shut down left and right, leaving our homes , skies, and shores unprotected.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out basic fiscal sanity: if you spend more money than you make, you go into debt. And if you continue to go into debt, eventually you go bankrupt. Yet our federal government and the career politicians in D.C. think that there is some special formula that doesn’t apply to government. That if they continue to borrow and spend, it will somehow produce positive results. The simple fact is that government never has and never will produce wealth; government can only take or spend wealth, but it can’t produce it.
The Founders went to great lengths to make sure our rights to privacy and liberty were protected. They had just experienced the effects of a repressive regime: being forced to house enemy soldiers in their homes; soldiers searching through their papers and personal items without any just cause; sailors being kidnapped and forced to serve in the King’s Navy; and the list goes on. Of all the powers listed in the Constitution, only the powers granted to maintain a military and protect our shores concern the government protecting us.
